Cargo Worldwide

Trucks are classified based on the way that they are built and the amount of weight that they can carry. Learn the difference between the different types of cargo trucks if you are interested in a career in the transportation industry. This is important as different licenses are required for driving different kinds of trucks, and different laws apply to certain classes of vehicles. Also note that the actual legal definitions of weight classes of truck, and the license requirements for driving them, can differ from state to state.

Light Trucks

  • Light trucks are the smallest type of trucks, and are used to deliver only small cargo, usually within a single city. Conventional pickup trucks fall into this category. However, smaller parcel delivery trucks also often qualify as light trucks, and therefore also deserve mention as a category of cargo truck. A vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of up to 14,000 lbs. will be classified as a light truck.

Medium Trucks

  • There are a number of vehicles that fall into the category of medium trucks. Ambulances or garbage trucks often fall into this category. A substantial number of one-piece delivery trucks with a large cargo space will be classified as medium trucks. In Washington, medium trucks are classified as those with a GVWR between 14,001 and 33,000 lbs.

Large Trucks

  • Large trucks are typically semis. Any vehicle with a GVWR of more than 33,000 lbs. would fall into this category. Large trucks with a tandem axle or split axle setup used for long haul cargo moving make up the majority of this category. In order to drive these types of trucks, a person will normally need the highest level of commercial license offered in their state.

Axle Classification

  • In addition to classifying trucks by weight, they are also often classified based on the number of axles that they have. For example, in California, a class B license allows a person to drive a three axle vehicle, but they require a class A for driving vehicles with a larger number of axles.

  • The Federal Highway Administration classifies vehicles by axle, starting with trucks that consist of a single unit and have two axles and six tires, and moves all the way up to seven or more multi-trailer trucks in their largest category. Each category in between is classified by the number of axles, and whether the truck is a single or multi-unit vehicle.
